Regal Homes: Our sustainability journey

Our sustainability journey

During the last 20 years, Regal Homes has come to specialise in country homes and off-grid living. This process involved not only careful design but also conscious choice of appliances and systems that would allow a continuous supply of power to off grid homes.

We always strive to capture as much north facing living as possible—the sustainability benefits are huge.

Since 1973

Sustainability has always been in our DNA

Regal Homes was established in 1973 by Boris Stoka. While many builders in the industry paid little attention to the benefits of siting homes to take advantage of the North sun, Regal Homes were already conscious of this important aspect and orientated their project homes to capture as much living to the north as possible when they could.

Off-grid living Specialists

Throughout the years Regal Homes have adapted their inclusions and modified their designs to further enhance the energy efficiency of our homes. In fact, our in house designer was a part of the original nathers pilot programme before the introduction of the programme in 2004.

2019

The Edwin display home achieved an 8-star energy rating and won display home of the year

In 2019 we began work on a new display home in Coombs, The Edwin. We wanted to build a home that would demonstrate to our visitors how different an energy-efficient home feels, by providing a home they can walk through and experience themselves.

In initial discussions with the designer Michael Piscone, we decided to apply many principles used when designing passive homes. Drawing on his vast experience, our designer custom designed a home with a certified 8-star energy efficiency rating and orientation that would perfectly suit our block. We managed to achieve this 8 Star rating by applying not only sound design principles but with thoughtful use of materials. Proudly, the Edwin, won display home of the year in 2022.

The Edwin display home was opened in October 2020 amidst the covid-19 pandemic and is still on display today.

2020 – present

Our next step forward in our sustainability journey

In 2020 Boris handed over the reins to his daughter Natasha. With 4 children of her own, Regal’s next step forward in our sustainability journey is to build an even more sustainable display home taking into account age-old design principles, new eco-friendly materials and a home that is adaptable for multi-generational living.

We are currently designing a display home in Murrumbateman and this home will be simple yet elegant and will embrace the ideals we wish to inspire in our clients and the wider community. We wish to showcase the options available to people wanting to build a new home as well as people who have decided to renovate their current home.

Whilst Regal Homes has traditionally been a new home builder, that is not always the most sustainable option for families.

The Canberra community is full of old homes with ‘good bones’ that with a little thought, and a lot of love can be redesigned to be more energy efficient and suitable for the changing needs of families.

To be able to retain the existing structure of a home yet redesign the internal layout is more sustainably minded and likely a more affordable option for many families. Regal Homes will be launching this new service in early 2023 and it will enable homeowners to engage a long-established, reputable builder to help craft their current homes for the future.
